You must have preregistered for an Iphone on the websites of Airtel or Vodafone. If yes then the information regarding purchase of Iphone was supposed to be emailed to you. But for others and those who missed the mail let us throw some light.  

To Buy Iphone 3G from Airtel India 
(Rs 5000/- Advance Payment Required)

Airtel will be selling 8GB Iphone (black) and 16 GB (black and white) from 22nd August, but you have to book your phone by paying Rs 5000 by advance to confirm your purchase as quoted from mail sent by Airtel to those who preregistered for Iphone. But the mail stating this information only came on 21st August i.e. a day before it was launched so most of the buyers could not book before the launch date. The Iphone can be booked at an Airtel store any time by paying Rs 5000. Fast come fast serve policy is followed for booking Iphones as they are having a limited number of sets, so book yours now by paying Rs 5000 as soon as possible. After confirming the purchase by paying Rs 5000, you would be contacted by them after few days when you have to pay the remaining balance and get your Iphone.

To Buy Iphone 3G from Vodafone India
(Rs 10,000 Advanced Payment Required To Confirm)

Vodafone gives priority to the preregistered users on booking the Iphones. Iphone enthusiasts who had preregistered for Iphone in the Vodafone website can pay an advance of Rs 10,000 at any Vodafone stores to book or confirm their Iphone purchase. After few days of booking, you’ll be contacted for paying the remaining balance and you get this luxury phone on the same day. Also before paying an advance, you need to have an active Vodafone connection or SIM which is compulsory, as stated in their email. You can always apply for the new Vodafone connection while paying the advance at the preferred Vodafone store, so don’t forget to carry documents like address proof, identity proof etc.  You can pay the advance after the launch of Iphone (August 22) i.e. at any preferred day even if you have not preregistered. But they need a few days after the advance payment to deliver the Iphone and you pay the balance amount after payment. Also it’s bit difficult to purchase from Vodafone because of the compulsory Vodafone connection and preference to pre registered users.

So if you wish to get the Iphone just pay the advance at the nearest Vodafone or Airtel stores as soon as and you get the Iphone when you pay the remaining balance after few days of booking only. India has a limited number of Iphone for sale so be wise enough to book yours now else we know how embarrassing is missing such a product especially when it’s newly launched. Remember Iphone is a more show-off stuff in India where most of the common mobile features and 3G services are missing.

Buy Iphone 3G Now or Wait for Price to Reduce?

We would recommend to wait because the premium prices Rs 31000 and Rs 36,100 are not the actual worth of Iphone 3G in India because the high end mobiles like Nokia N95 which have most of its functionalities costs about Rs 10,000 less and 3G revolution is not going to catch hype in India in the next  1-2 years. Also you don’t get any advantage of 3G since any of the Iphone 3G functionalities are not going to work here. So we recommend to wait for around 6 months to purchase the Iphone 3G at the expected price of Rs 20,000 range (approximately estimated).  Iphone 3G would be network locked i.e. no other network except the Vodafone and Airtel may not be used, but we are no more dumb as every small mobile repair outlet can unlock the network lock in minutes making it usable with other Indian GSM providers like BSNL, Aircell, Reliance etc.

Prior to starting out, you should know that the iPhone 3G has not yet been unlocked. Es, you heard that right. Truth is the Pwnage process will not unlock your 3G iPhone, doesn’t matter how much effort you put into it. Here’s the fine print, this system will help you jailbreaking but certainly not unlock it. Nevertheless it will open up your Iphone for other providers.

Before we start to jailbreak your Iphone 3g or 2.0 you first read the following:

System requirements you’ll need:

• Windows XP or Windows Vista
• .NET Framework 2.0 or later iTunes 7.7    
• In case you are updating from iTunes 7.5, do restart your computer right away and then continue.

Files you’ll need to download first need:

• WinPwn 2.0 at RapidShare.com.
• iPhone1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw
• 2.0 firmware Bootloader 3.9
• Bootloader 4.6

For everybody how doesn’t have the patience to read out the complete Jailbreak 2.0 guide we made a short overview. Check this quick and easy 2.0 guide: 

1. For starters, download WinPwn  
2. Let’s say you already have it installed, then open winpwn.exe  
3. It’ll creat a shortcut on your desktop, look for the icon
4. To ease the situation, create an “iphone” folder on your desktop.
5. Save your files here(bootloaders, 2.0 firmware, and the winpwn 2.0 zip file)
   This saves you the confusion of selecting files, browsing, etc.

If you see an image like the above, it’s your WinPwn 2.0 version.  The guidance from here on is to get your iPhone Pwned(new term) and load it with a custom 2.0 firmware.  This was possible with the 1st generation iPhone. This made it possible to unlock 2.0 with the 3.9 bootloader. Do remember, that this has not unlocked the 3G iPhone.

You need to click the first button prompting Browse .ipsw.  It should be simpler if you made that desktop folder. Put the 2.0 firmware downloaded from the needed files list in the same desktop folder.

Next you need select iPhone1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw from the list.  Just double click it or tap the open button. After selecting the firmware, there’ll be some more text in the output.  This is just a prompt notifying you that the firmware has been loaded on to winpwn.

Enter the OK button.  Now enter the IPSW Builder button.  Do not touch the options provided at the bottom.

Now the IPSW Builder will show up.  Use Cydia, the packaging system that allows you to download applications to your phone, this is similar to Installer.  This has a strong backend and great prospect.  By the way it’s the only option, so go for it, takes a while, so get some coffee.

Once you click the iPwner key, it makes the required changes.  It probably does so to make it possible for you to restore your custom firmware that’s created at the end.  Well, that’s the whole idea anyways.

iTunes has been Pwned!
So now we’re underway. It’s the start, iTunes has been modified, but it surely is needed later. That was easy, so now onto the custom images.

We used some default custom images but of course you can browse the online feature and choose from the cool boot logos. 

Smooth going so far. Let’s leave the Custom Payload tab and move to Advanced.

Feeling a little grounded yet? It would have been easier if you had downloaded the needed files at the start of the tutorial.  It’s easy.  If they’re in your iphone folder, click the relevant button and choose the correct Bootloader. It’s easy, choose a  BL-39.bin for the Bootloader 3.9 file.

When this is sorted, it’s time to be on the go. So you either see a red or a green, and the green means you’re raring to go.

Next step: Build .ipsw, this too should already be in your precious iphone folder.

So now, you’ve created a custom firmware. You obviously are ready to load it. It’s almost going to be over really soon.

Now your device needs to be in DFU mode. Don’t get into the technicalities, just select the mode.

• Turn the phone off
• We mean off for real
• Alongside, push the home and power buttons
• After 10 seconds, release the power button
• Keep holding the home button till iTunes recognizes the phone
• The process should take 7 seconds, at the most 10. In case you overshot your time, start again by switching the phone on and then off again.
• The iPhone screen will be blank
• It will even look like it’s still turned off
• When iTunes recognizes it - you’re in DFU mode

You are DONE Jailbreaking your new Iphone 3g, Iphone 2.0 or Ipod Touch 2.0. Now enjoy!

2) Click “Ipwner” and browse for the custom IPSW that you just created. This will pwn iTunes and allow you to flash Custom IPSW files via DFU mode
3) Once you have pwned iTunes, put your phone into DFU mode.
4) Once you are in DFU mode iTunes will pop up and then you can hold shift and click restore and browse to your custom IPSW file.

If you want to Jailbreak your iPhone or iPod Touch, then you have 3 common choices on how to do it:

1) Ziphone
2) iLiberty +
3) Pwnage/Winpwn

Ziphone is the most popular, but is known to some times not work on Windows XP (but that’s very rare). I recommend Ziphone to all Windows Vista users, for Mac users iLiberty or Ziphone is the best. The reason I do not recommend pwnage or winpwn is because it is still in beta testing and you could brick or mess up you iPod/iphone. But, if you are willng that risk, I diffinently recommend pwnage(Mac)/Winpwn(PC). By the way, there is absolutely no risk when using Ziphone or iLiberty.

Jailbreak With iLiberty+ (Recommended for XP and Mac):

1) Plug your iPod touch or iPhone into your computer and open up iTunes
2) Click restore
3) It will come up with several things saying “Are you sure?” just click yes. When it says, “Do you want to back your ipod touch/iphone up?” Click which ever option you find necessary for your situation.
4) Once it is restored you need to download iLiberty:
PC - http://uppit.com/VOV053
Mac - http://uppit.com/RI8IUL
5) Go to the iLiberty ZIP folder and extract it
6) Click the iLiberty icon on your desktop and install it
7) Open iLiberty then:
Mac users: Check Jailbreak and Installer then click “Free My Device”
PC users: Check Jailbreak and Installer then click “Go For It!”

If “Installer” is not an option then do this:
Make sure Jailbreak is checked (it should already be), then go to the top and click on “Advanced”, then click
the “repo” tab at the bottom. Once you are at repo Find/Check “Installer” then
click “Download”. Next, go to Standard and make sure that Jailbreak is checked, then go back to advance, go to “Local”/”Local Payload” and check Installer. Once you did all that you just have to Click “Go for it!” or
“Free My Device”!

8 ) (after it’s done) Go to the Contacts app on your iphone/ipod and for about 10 seconds just type random things (do this twice) this will prevent your ipos from freezing up.
9) Your done!

Jailbreak with Ziphone (Recommended for Vista and Mac):

1) Plug your iPod touch or iPhone into your computer and open up iTunes
2) Click restore
3) It will come up with several things saying “Are you sure?” just click yes. When it says, “Do you want to back your ipod touch/iphone up?” Click which ever option you find necessary for your situation.
4) Go to:

and click the one that goes with your operating system (Top Windows - Bottom Mac)(Linux not supported)
5) Click the Zipone icon and when the message pops up, click ok.
6) When the next thing pops up it should say “C:\Documents and Settings\YOURNAMEHERE\Desktop\ZiPhone”
change it to “C:\Documents and Settings\YOURNAMEHERE\Desktop\” then click Unzip
7) Now a bunch of files will pop up on your desktop and this application will pop up (ziphone)
8 ) Click Jailbreak
9) Your done!

Power on the device and you’ll find the pleasantly large 3.5″ is a multi-functional touch screen with a stunning 480×320 pixels resolution.

The iPhone boasts a 2mp camera with a maximum resolution of 1600×1200 pixels. The picture quality is excellent provided you are not a photophile and there is enough ambient light. The camera’s lack of flash and auto focus are a major drawback.

The internet browsing is where the iPhone truly outclasses every other PDA in the market. With the built-in Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g and the Safari web browser ported directly from Mac OS X you almost forget you are using a PDA. The onscreen keyboard which can also be rotated horizontally for a full keyboard feel makes writing an e-mail or even typing in a web address a breeze.

Of course the iPhone also doubles as an iPod which comes with a few new tricks. The CoverFlow application allows you to browse your music by flipping through album covers with your fingers. The sound quality is as you would expect crystal clear and on par with any iPod.

Finally as a phone the iPhone does not offer any out of the ordinary features and is pretty much on par with any of the latest releases from Nokia or Samsung. The quad-band GSM 850/900/1800/1900 allows you to travel anywhere in the world and also offers a strong reception in both rural and suburb settings. The one feature that severely cripples the iPhone from being the greatest PDA cellphone is the lack of 3G. Considering the iPhone’s internet enabled applications the lack of 3G does not allow the user to make full use of these.

The Apple iPhone certainly is a well rounded PDA/Cellphone and despite a few shortcomings it will keep even the most techno-geeks happy until Apple releases an upgrade in a year or two.
