iPhone vs. iPod Touch
iPhone vs. iPod Touch – Looks Can Be Deceiving. When the iPhone was released back in the summer of 2007 many of us broke open our piggy bank only to find ourselves a few hundred dollars short of the $500 price tag Apple was commandeering. Then there were those of us who didn’t want to switch to AT&T and pay an extra $50 a month for the privilege of using a touch screen iPod. Apple heard our cries and it wasn’t long after the original iPhone release that the iPod Touch was released. On the surface the two devices share many similarities minus the phone feature of course, but take a closer look and you will find several notable differences between the two that make the iPhone a far superior multimedia device.
The physical specifications are very similar although the iPod Touch is a mere 3mm thinner and 0.06 oz thinner. Every other physical component including the hard drive and the touch screen are exactly the same.
Perhaps the most disappointing feature that was not ported over from the iPhone to the iPod Touch is the camera. For what was supposed to be a full featured multimedia device the lack of a camera certainly is lacking.
While the iPod Touch is dotted with a built-in wi-fi 802.11 b/g Apple failed to include many of the applications found on the iPhone. The Mail application which acts as a Blackberry alerting you immediately when you receive a new e-mail message, the Maps application which is built on Google Maps for finding your way back to the hotel. In addition to these two application the iPhone also offers a Weather application which gives you a 5 day forecast as well as a Stocks application to monitor the Apple stock’s constantly rising share price. While Apple has released a paid upgrade that will give iPod Touch users access to these applications, a $20 fee, it has no plans on including them in the revised iPod Touch models.
In more technical terms the iPhone outperforms the iPod Touch with its additional 2 hours battery life in music mode which can also be listened on the built-in stereo speakers which the iPod Touch unfortunately lacks.
The iPhone and the iPod Touch may appear almost identical on the surface but as you can see the iPhone clearly outshines it’s phoneless counterpart. While these differences may not be deal breakers for the average user the price gap between the two should be more significant to take these into account.
